Manitoba Chamber Orchestra: Free Summer Concerts, August 23 & August 24
The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra will launch its 40th anniversary season with two free outdoor concerts in August: Thursday, August 23rd, at the Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine Park, and on Friday, August 24th at The Forks under the canopy. Both concerts begin at 7:00 PM, are about an hour long, and are free to the public. The MCO is especially thrilled to be featuring Canadian soprano sensation Isabel Bayrakdarian on these concerts.
Bayrakdarian came to international fame through her performance on the soundtrack for
The Lord of the Rings; she has worked with the MCO several times in the last few years. In 2008, the Orchestra accompanied her on tour throughout North America, culminating in a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York that resulted in three curtain calls.
The soprano will remain in Winnipeg for a few days to record a new compact disc with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. With music written and arranged by Serouj Kradjian, the selected repertoire for the recording is inspired by the lives, poetry and music of the 'trobairitz,' European female troubadours of the 12th and 13th centuries. The recording will capture the colours and flavours of one legendary 'trobairitz,' Ysabella, whose origins and travels are shrouded in mystery.
The concerts and recording will include Trobairitz Ysabella, a major work by Kradjian that was premiered by the MCO and Bayrakdarian in 2010, along with works by Ravel and Armenian composer Sayat Nova. MCO Music Director Anne Manson will conduct. Bayrakdarian will also perform on the September 12th opening concert of the MCO's 40th anniversary season.
