About the work:
 
Lesage is deconstructing the English lexicon and reformatting it as a spatial eddy. Inspired by Marshall McLuhan’s statements on media, Re: Definition was borne of a simple question, what would happen if text were woven? By weaving strips of printed and non-printed paper from the 1956 Webster’s Encyclopedic Dictionary, Lesage creates astonishing panels each investigating a new potential in both composition as well as material condition. Each new 50.8 cm x 152.4 cm (20” x 60”) panel is hung in a radiating spatial pattern, expanding like the propagation of radio waves outwards from the centre.
 
As much as Re: Definition is an exploration of form and meaning it is an essay in craft and technique. With each new panel new parameters are tested exploring and developing various weaving techniques. The project creates a spatial resonance of printed word loaded with reconstituted meaning. Re: Definition will be finished when the entire dictionary is physically exhausted. By ignoring the original format of the dictionary ie alphabetically, the viewer is eternally seeking to make linguistic sense of the panels. Thus, one can begin to understand the project as a means for re-purposing an artifact which is becoming an out dated mode of indexing, an object of curiosity.

About the artist:

Lesage is a 35-year-old Winnipeg based self-taught artist. His work has been shown at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and La Maison des artistes visuels francophones and most recently at Golden City Fine Art. This will be his third exhibition of the “Re:Definiton” project.
